The Finnish Environment Institute, the Finnish Defence Forces, the Finnish Border Guard and the Ministry of the Environment announce: The Finnish Environment Institute and the Finnish Navy removed oil from the wreck of the coastal defence ship Ilmarinen between 14 and 24 July 2026. In addition, the Finnish Border Guard, which was prepared for environmental response operations, and the Diving Medical Center participated in the operation. Over the course of two weeks, approximately 60,000 litres of oil was recovered from the vessel’s fuel tanks, but the wreck could not be completely emptied yet. Because of the rough seas, the work had to be interrupted from time to time.
